These voices will often dictate how you discipline yourself and what comforts you allow yourself to have.

Part 3 of this series will be about the dynamics between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice shown through aspects.

ASPECTS: THE DYNAMIC BETWEEN THE INNER VOICE AND THE AUTHORITATIVE VOICE

Moon trine Saturn: Having your Moon trine to Saturn shows that the relationship between the inner nurturing and the authoritative voice is effortlessly harmonious. The interests of nurturing and discipline work seamlessly together. Having such a harmonious dynamic often results with the individual having a healthy grasp on how to exist in and out of the comfort zone. The individual is more likely to healthily structure emotions and ambitions to encourage growth. This can manifest literally as seamless harmony in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon sextile Saturn: Having your Moon sextile to Saturn shows that the relationships between the inner nurturing and the authoritative voice has easy opportunities to be harmonious. The harmony between these inner voices aren’t immediate, but can be easily made. Unlike the Moon trine Saturn aspect, the differences between the Moon and Saturn are more prominent in the sextile. The sextile highlights that while the nurturing and authoritative voices are individually different, their individual dynamics can work well together. This can manifest literally as harmonious individualities in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon conjunct Saturn: Having your Moon conjunct to Saturn shows that the relationship between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice is closely aligned. If the two planets are in the same house, both voices aim to be present in the same area of life. Positively, these voices will work together as a double unit to show healthy control of comfort and discipline. Negatively, this can result as the two planets attempting to dominate one another. The line between comfort and discipline starts to blur, and it can be difficult for the individual to make a distinction between the two in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon square Saturn: Having your Moon square to Saturn shows that the objective between the nurturing and the authoritative voice clash, making it hard for one voice to achieve what it seeks. Due to this, the individual can often feel frustrated, feeling as if their emotional needs are not met and/or they have not achieved enough according to their personal expectations. However, with this frustration, the individual is able to explore the limits of the comfort zone and sense of discipline, insightfully finding ways to go in and out the comfort zone. This can manifest literally as blockages in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon opposing Saturn: Having your Moon opposed to Saturn shows that the individual can struggle with reconciling the relationship between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice when it comes to encountering other individuals and encountering themselves internally. This aspect can affect the individual’s relationship to self and with others in terms of determining the comfort and authoritative level the individual can implement to oneself and to others. This can literally manifest as identity and relational struggles in the individual’s family dynamic.

The Conjunction

There are five major aspects in astrology: the conjunction, opposition, trine, sextile, and square. This post will specifically talk about the conjunction.

A conjunction (☌) is when two planets in a chart is 0 degrees of each other. This would mean that two planets will be in the same sign and house, unless you use certain house systems like Placidus where there are exceptions. Sometimes, with various house systems, you can get off-sign (or dissociate) aspects due to creating aspects out of location rather than the signs. In-sign aspects will be of focus.

The conjunction is considered the most powerful aspect in astrology. Due to its power, lots of astrologers assign a larger orb to conjunctions. The conjunction (by itself) is also the only aspect that can be seen as “neutral” (as opposed to harmonious or disharmonious.)

With the involved planets being in the same signs, this means that the two planets will have the same element, modality, and polarity. What you essentially have is two facets of your self-expression having the same goals. The power of two planets becomes a singular unit. This is where the power of conjunctions come from. Other than the unique characteristics of the planets, there’s little to no differences.

Disclaimer: Even though a conjunction can strongly bind two planets together, it does not mean the planets lose their sense of autonomy to the aspect. The planet is independent, but makes numerous relations to other planets in the chart.

Now, the conjunction by itself is neutral, but this neutrality will inevitably change once you look to the actual planets involved and the signs they are in. Looking at the essential dignities can definitely show whether the conjunction will be comfortable or uncomfortable.

As for the actual manifestation of the conjunction, whether it will be positive or not depends on the planets involved and the individual. It could go either powerfully well or not.

Here is a visual example of a conjunction. Mars is in 6 degrees Aquarius while the Moon is in 13 degrees Aquarius. This would be Moon-Mars conjunction with an orb of 7 degrees!

Astrology Basics: An Overview on Aspects

In modern astrology, there are four main basic building blocks one needs to understand in any branch of astrology: signs, planets, houses, and aspects. This post will specifically be about aspects in general. There will be separate posts about the major aspects themselves.

So what are aspects? Aspects are the connections planets have with each other depending on the sign and location they are in on the chart. It is essentially the relationships and conversations your planets have with each other.

Note: Degrees will show you the exact location of anything in astrology. Understanding degrees is important in understanding aspects.

The aspects in your natal chart is one of many ways to find that your planets in your natal chart are not just independent and autonomous celestial bodies. There are five major aspects in astrology: the conjunctionoppositionsextiletrine, and square.

The aspects can be understood as harmonious or disharmonious. By looking at aspects alone, trines and sextiles are harmonious while squares and oppositions are disharmonious. Conjunctions are neutral.

The strengths of aspects will also vary. Conjunctions and oppositions are often stronger than squares, sextiles, and trines. Due to this, the general orbs for conjunctions and oppositions are higher while the orbs for trines, squares, and sextiles are lower.

Orbs are a mathematical leeway when an aspect occurs. For example, a conjunction is when two planets are 0 degrees of each other. However, with orbs, a planet can be up to 10 degrees away from another planet and it would still be a conjunction, depending on your system of orbs. The existence of orbs argues that the effects of aspects do not have to be numerically exact, but its strength will increase as the planets come closer to a numerically exact aspect.

One common question is: What are the right orbs for each aspect? In various branches in astrology, the orbs will often change. For example, natal astrology will often have larger orbs than predictive astrology. Also, orbs are often personally determined by you. Find or create an orb system that works for you. Here is my personal orb system for reference:

Natal astrology

  • Conjunctions - 10 degree orb

  • Oppositions - 8 degree orb

  • Sextiles, squares, trines - 4-6 degree orb

Predictive astrology (transits)

  • Conjunctions - 5 degree orb

  • Oppositions - 3 degree orb

  • Sextiles, squares, trines - 2 degree orb

Another way to understand aspects generally is how they are formed. Planets will move counterclockwise in a chart, their movements creating aspects since some planets move faster than others.

When an aspect is moving closer to an exact aspect, it is applying. When an aspect is moving away from an exact aspect, it is separating. The orb of an aspect will gradually decrease with applying aspects and will gradually increase with separating aspects.

Astro.com will show you whether an aspect is applying or separating and will also show you whether the aspect is greater or less than the exact aspect.

Unaspected Planets in Astrology

WHAT IS AN UNASPECTED PLANET?

An unaspected planet is a planet that is not making any major aspects to other planets. An unaspected planet can make an aspect to angles (such as the Ascendant or Midheaven) and still be unaspected. While the general consensus is that one should look at the major aspects, some astrologers like to also include some minor aspects (such as the semi-sextile) when considering unaspected planets in the natal chart.

WHAT ARE THE ORBS USED WHEN FINDING UNASPECTED PLANETS?

The orbs are ultimately up to the astrologer evaluating the natal chart. There is really no “right or wrong” orbs to use. Orbs in the natal chart can often make an unaspected planet rare, for orbs provide numerical leeway for aspects to be evaluated.

ARE UNASPECTED PLANETS WEAK IN THE NATAL CHART?

Unaspected planets can be very powerful in the natal chart, despite the fact that there are no aspects (a common indicator for power and influence in the natal chart) being made to it.

HOW DOES AN UNASPECTED PLANET MANIFEST IN THE NATAL CHART?

Manifestation of unaspected planets can be highly unpredictable. With that being said, with unaspected planets, it’s very important to look at the sign and house it’s in to get a better look at the unaspected planet. The unaspected planet can act as a “rebel” or a “lonely” planet compared to the other planets in the natal chart because there are no aspects, in other words, connections made to the other planets. This means that the unaspected planet is completely free and not under any control of the other planets in the natal chart. In this sense, the unaspected planet in the natal chart is independent, but perhaps distant. With no connections to other planets, the expression of the planet can be very pure and powerful. The unaspected planet can function as a unit separate from the planets that do have aspects in the natal chart.

Those with an unaspected planet may manifest the planet without knowing it. After all, with no other connections to the other planets in the natal chart, it can be difficult to reach the unaspected planet consciously, which can result in what could be considered a “weak manifestation.” However, the manifestation of an unaspected planet can also be very powerful, but the native can struggle to notice this while others can. There are many examples where the native can unknowingly show energies of their unaspected planets strongly, only to be genuinely surprised when other people point it out.

An unaspected planet can often be referred to as a hidden talent or insidious destruction, depending on how the native decides to use the planet. Again, it can be difficult to not only notice, but also harness the energies of an unaspected planet due to the distant nature of the planet. The native must learn to own the unaspected planet.

Personal planets are often more strongly felt than the outer planets, with Mars being the most powerful and noticeable planet when unaspected in the natal chart. Manifestations of the outer planets in the natal chart are often debated.

The Difference Between Oppositions and Squares

You can find the difference between aspects in how the signs work with each other. It can be really hard to solidly tell a difference between an opposition and a square, since they can bring similar, disharmonious effects. However, this does not mean their effects are exactly the same.

An opposition is composed of two sister signs… but what is the actual composition of an opposition? In order to have an opposition, you need two signs that share the same polarity and mode, but are different in their elements. For a square, you need to have two signs that differ in polarity and element, but share the same mode.

The effects of oppositions and squares are quite different. For an opposition, there is often an emphasis of two sides. Instead of functioning like a single, powerful unit, like a conjunction, the two planets involved in an opposition will often go into opposite directions to achieve the same motive. You can see that the signs involved in an opposition have the same motive because they have the same polarity and mode. With the same polarity, opposing signs will have their motive take place in the same environment, which can either be external (masculine) or internal (feminine.) With the same mode, the two opposing planets will go at the motive with the same energetic method. This does not mean the actual method will be the same, but the framework of the method will be. The actual method will differ through the elements and the rulerships of the signs involved. Many of the signs that are opposing each other are also ruled by planets that have massive archetypal differences, which drives the disharmonious differences in an opposition. For example, Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of conflict while Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of harmony.

It’s also important to note that the two opposing planets will also take place in opposing Houses in the natal chart since the planets must be 180 degrees away. The reason why there is such a polarizing pull from an opposition is because the planets involved in an opposition are involved in two Houses that are focused on seemingly “opposite” subjects. A good example is the 1st and the 7th House. The 1st House is focused on the self, while the 7th House is focused on the other - both are tied to relations and identity.

For a square, there is the feeling of a “block” between two planets in two different signs. One planet will try to express itself, only to be blocked by the other planet and vice versa. There can be a lot of tension with a square aspect, for the native can often feel restricted from doing what they seek to do. Often, for planets involved in a square, there is often a feeling of knowing how to channel your energy (due to the same mode) into a certain task, only to find that the actual energy required to get to the task are in two completely different environments, which is why a square feels very tense. For example, Scorpio is square to Aquarius. Both signs would like to remain stable, yet persistent in a certain subject (since they’re both fixed,) but Aquarius would like to gain this stability through rationality (air) in the outside environment (masculine,) but Scorpio would rather gain this stability through emotions (water) in an inside environment (feminine.) Due to the different polarities and environments involved, there’s a conflict. It’s hard to accomplish a task involving two different environments and methods. It’s important to note that the squares take place in Houses that are 90 degrees away from each other, since a square is 90 degrees between two planets.

Often, you’ll find that the Houses involved are often subjects that strive for the same goal, but through different ways. A good example is the 1st and 4th House. The 1st House represents your identity, while your 4th House represents your family. Both you and your family strive to invest in your success, but you can find that your family will want something different from you, even though the end goal is success. This is why people can sometimes feel that the family is a threat to their identity.

The Difference Between Trines and Sextiles

You can find the difference between aspects in how the signs work with each other. It can be really hard to solidly tell a difference between a sextile and a trine, since they can bring similar, harmonious effects. However, this does not mean their effects are exactly the same.

While both trines and sextiles are harmonious, the two aspects are very different in what they’re composed of. A trine consists of two signs that are of the same element and polarity while a sextile is composed of two signs that are of different elements, but share the same polarity.

This is important to note because signs that are trine to each other work so naturally and easily to where the native can often not notice the workings of this aspect. This is why people tend to say that trines can either be used for natural talent, or be wasted due to ignorance. The reason why the trine works so naturally is because the two signs involved have the same element, in other words, medium to work with. For example, water signs use emotions as a medium to express themselves, and when two water signs are brought together, they can easily work together because there isn’t an need to change the current medium in hand. When there is no change, there is less room for a misunderstanding between the two signs. However, with no change, there can be a lack of movement and stimulation.

Sextiles however, work harmoniously on different, but compatible mediums due to the same polarity. For example, fire and air signs work well together because both of their mediums (energy and communication) are seen in external environments due to their masculine polarity. Due to the mediums both being external, there is less room for misunderstanding, which makes the aspect harmonious. However, since the mediums involved are different, sextiles do not feel as natural as trines since the native must use two different mediums to express the aspect. Natives with sextiles are often aware of this aspect because it doesn’t feel as natural as a trine and will often consciously express this aspect.

*The only exceptions that can be made to this post are the existence of out-of-sign aspects. Out-of-sign aspects need to be looked at more carefully, since the energy with out-of-sign aspects are not only weaker, but can also be different. You can check the differences in the specific signs, planets, and houses involved.

“Red Flag” Synastry Aspects (Part 1)

Synastry can be a confusing subject to look at. It’s already confusing enough to look at your natal chart, imagine how confusing it’d be to combine your natal chart with another person’s! In a synastry calculator, you can be very confused with what you see. So many lines, so many aspects to look at.

Aspects is a very important component in synastry. It’s the connections your planets make to your partner’s. It gives insight to the interactions between you two. While there’s some free-flowing, easy aspects, there’s some hard, challenging ones.

And sometimes, if not managed correctly, challenging aspects can turn into toxic, unhealthy aspects.

A little disclaimer before I list such aspects. Everybody has their own idea of what a “red flag” synastry aspect could be. This is just my opinion on what I think would be toxic and unhealthy. And if you find that you and partner have one of these challenging aspects, don’t just throw your relationship out the door. Every relationship is challenging, and to just completely throw away a relationship just because you see a challenging aspect is foolish. It’s your relationship. Don’t let the stars determine your actions. I personally have one of the “red flag” aspects below, but remember that challenging aspects can also turn to transforming, powerful aspects in a good way!

  1. Moon Square or Opposite Saturn - In this aspect, it can be argued that the Moon person will be mainly harmed, but I believe both people with this aspect will be hurt. The Saturn person will feel that the Moon person is constantly irresponsible, scolding and criticizing the Moon person like a child. The Moon person feels emotionally damaged by this, and if not handled correctly, the Moon person will eventually sensor what he/she says to the Saturn person while the Saturn person will eventually be in the dark. The Moon person could eventually be depressed with the relationship while the Saturn person will not be satisfied.

  2. Mars Square or Opposite Pluto - This aspect is notoriously known as one of the most dangerous synastry aspects a couple could have. There is definitely a strong, notable aggressive attitude the Mars and Pluto person possesses while they are presented in different ways. Arguments can be quite explosive within this pairing, since both people are too stubborn and aggressive to give in. If the two individuals are physically violent, this aspect can show violence and abuse. However, if there isn’t any signs in the charts of each of individual, abuse and violence is not likely to occur.

  3. Mars Square or Opposite Saturn - Unlike the Moon Square or Opposite Saturn aspect, this aspect can negatively manifest into something more violent. With the disciplinary, harsh, and criticizing tendencies of Saturn, the Saturn person will most likely criticize the Mars person for everything they do since Mars is the planet of energy, and everything requires energy. The Mars person could have a need to rebel and openly act against the Saturn person while the Saturn person would have a stronger need to restrict the Mars person. Since Saturn is a planet that represents longevity, this aspect wouldn’t manifest early in a romantic relationship, but rather later into the relationship when both people are comfortable with each other.

  4. Venus Square or Opposite Uranus - In this aspect, the Uranus person will most likely want their relationship with the Venus to be as spontaneous and interesting as possible. However, the Venus person may want romantic structure in the relationship and the Uranus person can resent this. In romantic situations, it can be quite erratic and inconstant, making the relationship quite unsteady and dramatic, especially for the Venus person. Sometimes, the Uranus person can be romantically or emotionally distant from the Venus person.

  5. Venus Square of Opposite Pluto - There is a strong powerful struggle between the Venus and Pluto person. The Pluto person is likely to dominant over the Venus person, and sometimes, this can be hard for the Venus person to accept. The Pluto person can also be quite possessive and jealous when it comes to the Venus person. While there is a strong attraction between the two, the relationship between the two could be quite an emotional rollercoaster. If an relationship were to end between the Venus and Pluto person, the chances of repeating the relationship is slim due to the overpowering passion between the two.

I will probably make a part two of this when I find more aspects!
