Saturn in the 1st House

The 1st House is often the house that collectively represents how we view the world. The house represents the first breath we take, and our impressions of the world. The 1st House can usually rule over what we are consciously aware of. The 1st House is arguably one of the most important houses, for it is a template for the natal chart, setting the chart for which signs rule which houses.

When Saturn is in the 1st House, the individual is often focused on refining and improving the impression they give off to the world. For these individuals, there is a standard to how they should act and respond in and to the world. Due to this, those with Saturn in the 1st House pay a lot of attention to their self-expression and themselves, working hard to make sure they live up to their own standards. Saturn in the 1st individuals express themselves carefully.

Due to this constant refining and care into their self-expression, those with Saturn in the 1st House can often hesitate when it comes to expressing themselves. They are constantly stifling themselves in their own self-expressions if such self-expressions do not fall under the inner standard they have. Due to this, Saturn in the 1st individuals feel as if people don’t really have a firm and true understanding of them. Saturn in the 1st individuals simultaneously longing and fear for people to understand them. There is a sense of loneliness these people tend to have due to not being able to completely relate to others, but at the same time, there is a sense of fear because these individuals do not want to show any sort of vulnerability.

Saturn in the 1st individuals tend to have high expectations on the world, and due to this, they are often disappointed and can be quite judgmental to others due to being judgmental to themselves. When they encounter others who do not fall into their inner standard, they are often disappointed and displeased. This judgmental aspect can often contribute to the inner loneliness these individuals feel because not only do they alienate other people, they alienate themselves.

The standard that Saturn in the 1st House individuals have when it comes to self-expression often comes from the realistic, yet somber perspective they have of reality. Saturn in the 1st individuals will often respond to the world defensively, the inner standard they have is a defensive response to the realistic workings of the world. These individuals are aware of how uncaring and unsympathetic the world can be, so they will often give the same response right back. People with Saturn in the 1st House try their best to not be immature and naive, and will often dismiss themselves if they ever were to find themselves in a vulnerable position.

Due to the consistent questioning, redoing, and stifling of self-expression, those with Saturn in the 1st House can struggle with self-esteem. A lot of these self-esteem issues stem due to having overly high expectations of themselves. Those with Saturn in the 1st House have a strong understanding of how important self-expression is, and this is why these individuals work so hard on managing their self-expression. However, with so much management on their self-expression, these individuals often wonder if they will still be accepted if they were to stop standardizing their self-expression. The fact that these individuals work hard to manage themselves makes these people question if the hard work is indicative of inadequate self-expression.

However, even though the manifestation of negative self-criticism can be devastating for these individuals, the ability to reflect on oneself is a skill these individuals will eventually learn to master. Through difficult experiences, these individuals learn the power and urgency to be self-aware. Even though these individuals can attempt at self-awareness by being overly critical of themselves, attempting to be self-aware at all shows evidence that these individuals only want to achieve being the best individuals they can be. These people are ultimately ambitious, and at their best, motivated. There is always a sense of direction for these individuals that can lead to success. At their best, these individuals have a strong idea of how they affect themselves and others, and they intimately understand the idea of self-expression. Self-expression is important for these individuals and ultimately, it is a part of themselves they ultimately want to master.

Having Saturn in the 1st House ultimately shows an ambitious individual who wants to be their best. However, what these individuals need to learn is that while it is empowering to have an objective, it is important to not let the objective crush them. Often, the ambition and pressure these individuals put themselves under for the sake of success can often freeze them, often stopping them from moving towards their goals at all. These individuals need to understand that while implementing self expectations is responsible and practical, freezing oneself out of criticism is impractical and ultimately not realistic.

Those with Saturn in the 1st House need to familiarize themselves with the idea that having any sort of freedom should not be a threat to their goals. It’s okay for one to not be consistently on par with their goals. For these individuals, they need to understand that one’s efforts to be the best is enough, for one’s efforts is the only thing these individuals can control. Rather than determine the value of their efforts based on the results of their efforts, these individuals should base the value of their efforts on the fact that the effort is present at all. These individuals can not control the outcomes of their self-expression, but they can control the self-expression themselves.

Part 3 of this series will be about the dynamics between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice shown through aspects.

ASPECTS: THE DYNAMIC BETWEEN THE INNER VOICE AND THE AUTHORITATIVE VOICE

Moon trine Saturn: Having your Moon trine to Saturn shows that the relationship between the inner nurturing and the authoritative voice is effortlessly harmonious. The interests of nurturing and discipline work seamlessly together. Having such a harmonious dynamic often results with the individual having a healthy grasp on how to exist in and out of the comfort zone. The individual is more likely to healthily structure emotions and ambitions to encourage growth. This can manifest literally as seamless harmony in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon sextile Saturn: Having your Moon sextile to Saturn shows that the relationships between the inner nurturing and the authoritative voice has easy opportunities to be harmonious. The harmony between these inner voices aren’t immediate, but can be easily made. Unlike the Moon trine Saturn aspect, the differences between the Moon and Saturn are more prominent in the sextile. The sextile highlights that while the nurturing and authoritative voices are individually different, their individual dynamics can work well together. This can manifest literally as harmonious individualities in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon conjunct Saturn: Having your Moon conjunct to Saturn shows that the relationship between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice is closely aligned. If the two planets are in the same house, both voices aim to be present in the same area of life. Positively, these voices will work together as a double unit to show healthy control of comfort and discipline. Negatively, this can result as the two planets attempting to dominate one another. The line between comfort and discipline starts to blur, and it can be difficult for the individual to make a distinction between the two in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon square Saturn: Having your Moon square to Saturn shows that the objective between the nurturing and the authoritative voice clash, making it hard for one voice to achieve what it seeks. Due to this, the individual can often feel frustrated, feeling as if their emotional needs are not met and/or they have not achieved enough according to their personal expectations. However, with this frustration, the individual is able to explore the limits of the comfort zone and sense of discipline, insightfully finding ways to go in and out the comfort zone. This can manifest literally as blockages in the individual’s family dynamic.

Moon opposing Saturn: Having your Moon opposed to Saturn shows that the individual can struggle with reconciling the relationship between the inner nurturing and authoritative voice when it comes to encountering other individuals and encountering themselves internally. This aspect can affect the individual’s relationship to self and with others in terms of determining the comfort and authoritative level the individual can implement to oneself and to others. This can literally manifest as identity and relational struggles in the individual’s family dynamic.

Saturn in the 4th House

The 4th House represents several things: our past, upbringing, and what keeps us comfortable. The 4th House is in the bottom of the chart, and it often provides a strong starting point and foundation for the native to work upon as the native grows up. Planets in the 4th House show the person investing part of themselves in maintaining this foundation.

For those who have Saturn in the 4th House, they can remember their upbringing and past somberly. Saturn is the planet which represents our struggle with the harsh reality, and for these people, their harsh reality started right in the beginning of life, in their place of origin. When it comes to recalling the past, it is easy for the Saturn in the 4th individual to remember all of the struggles they went through growing up. The individual can often feel nostalgically proud for overcoming such struggles, or the individual can also feel the strings of the past lingering as they go on to do their present actions.

One of these struggles is finding and designating their idea of comfort. These individuals are often skeptical when it comes to settling down and being comfortable because they are skilled (sometimes to their own detriment) on finding how certain areas of comfort can possibly crumble. They are very aware of how reality can quickly take away their own comfort as soon as they grab a hold of it.

Due to this, people with this placement can struggle to be comfortable for long periods of time. Once these people have to let go of a comfort that they’ve held onto, it can be devastating since these people are already very selective of their safe spaces in the first place. But once these individuals find a true sense of home, they will commit strongly, not wanting to let go. After all, these individuals work hard to be comfortable in their own skin.

People with Saturn in the 4th over time will master the skill of finding and assigning a true and healthy safe space. These people are often critical of unhealthy comfort mechanisms, and will often find a sense of comfort in such a way where they can healthily be comfortable, but also grow as an individual. Due to their struggles, these people strongly understand the importance of safety and how safety can either help us grow or decay, depending on where we assign our idea of safety to.

Saturn can often represent the disciplinary parent. For those with Saturn in the 4th, they often found their disciplinary parent to strongly dominate their upbringing. The upbringing is often very structured and enforced, and early on, people with this placement to see their disciplinary parent to be an authority figure.

This parent may have been very critical, making people with this placement mature and grow up a lot faster than their peers. The disciplinary parent may have prioritized responsibility over nurturing. Rather than comfort the individual in distress, the parent would prefer to help the child cope and get over the distress instead. Due to this, individuals with this placement did not see the disciplinary parent as a source of emotional nurturing and will often attempt to nurture themselves elsewhere.

The disciplinary parent brought the harshness of reality into the comfort of these individuals, making them experience the harsh outside world within the comfort of their home. While the disciplinary parent gave an accurate picture of reality, which helps the individuals realistically prepare for the world, the disciplinary parent did not provide an emotionally nurturing way for the individuals to cope with the world.

Having the harsh reality so heavily permeated into these people in their safe space can often have positive and negative consequences. Due to feeling the harshness of reality early, people with this placement are often productive and independent. People with Saturn in the 4th House know how to survive and are often trustworthy in regards to practical matters. There is a certain worldly intelligence to those with Saturn in the 4th House.

However, due to knowing how to survive well in the world, it can be difficult for these individuals to show their weaknesses. Their past strongly taught them to be strong, but sometimes, in teaching this, their past made them forget that in order to be truly strong, they must know what weakness feels. These people will struggle to show their vulnerabilities to others because they never learned or were encouraged to show it.

Saturn represents our expectations, and with Saturn in the 4th House, it can be difficult to know the expectations Saturn in the 4th individuals have. Saturn in the 4th individuals will often reflect of their expectations in their designated safe spaces, and in a sense, these individuals will use their expectations to remain safe. Unless a Saturn in the 4th individual finds you to be comfortable enough to be or live in their safe space, the expectations Saturn in the 4th individuals have in general are often kept under wraps. Their expectations are often strongly influenced by the disciplinary parent.

Saturn in the 4th House is a placement that aims to teach the management of the home, comfort, and past. People with this placement have the opportunity to gain a true sense of comfort and safety and to also be skilled in healthily processing their past experiences. However, these skills do not come without struggle. Those with Saturn in the 4th House know very well that our past experiences can often provide a solid foundation of our being, and it is up to us to manage our past experiences in such a way where we can cultivate our best selves.

The Conjunction

There are five major aspects in astrology: the conjunction, opposition, trine, sextile, and square. This post will specifically talk about the conjunction.

A conjunction (☌) is when two planets in a chart is 0 degrees of each other. This would mean that two planets will be in the same sign and house, unless you use certain house systems like Placidus where there are exceptions. Sometimes, with various house systems, you can get off-sign (or dissociate) aspects due to creating aspects out of location rather than the signs. In-sign aspects will be of focus.

The conjunction is considered the most powerful aspect in astrology. Due to its power, lots of astrologers assign a larger orb to conjunctions. The conjunction (by itself) is also the only aspect that can be seen as “neutral” (as opposed to harmonious or disharmonious.)

With the involved planets being in the same signs, this means that the two planets will have the same element, modality, and polarity. What you essentially have is two facets of your self-expression having the same goals. The power of two planets becomes a singular unit. This is where the power of conjunctions come from. Other than the unique characteristics of the planets, there’s little to no differences.

Disclaimer: Even though a conjunction can strongly bind two planets together, it does not mean the planets lose their sense of autonomy to the aspect. The planet is independent, but makes numerous relations to other planets in the chart.

Now, the conjunction by itself is neutral, but this neutrality will inevitably change once you look to the actual planets involved and the signs they are in. Looking at the essential dignities can definitely show whether the conjunction will be comfortable or uncomfortable.

As for the actual manifestation of the conjunction, whether it will be positive or not depends on the planets involved and the individual. It could go either powerfully well or not.

Here is a visual example of a conjunction. Mars is in 6 degrees Aquarius while the Moon is in 13 degrees Aquarius. This would be Moon-Mars conjunction with an orb of 7 degrees!

Astrology Basics: An Overview on Aspects

In modern astrology, there are four main basic building blocks one needs to understand in any branch of astrology: signs, planets, houses, and aspects. This post will specifically be about aspects in general. There will be separate posts about the major aspects themselves.

So what are aspects? Aspects are the connections planets have with each other depending on the sign and location they are in on the chart. It is essentially the relationships and conversations your planets have with each other.

Note: Degrees will show you the exact location of anything in astrology. Understanding degrees is important in understanding aspects.

The aspects in your natal chart is one of many ways to find that your planets in your natal chart are not just independent and autonomous celestial bodies. There are five major aspects in astrology: the conjunctionoppositionsextiletrine, and square.

The aspects can be understood as harmonious or disharmonious. By looking at aspects alone, trines and sextiles are harmonious while squares and oppositions are disharmonious. Conjunctions are neutral.

The strengths of aspects will also vary. Conjunctions and oppositions are often stronger than squares, sextiles, and trines. Due to this, the general orbs for conjunctions and oppositions are higher while the orbs for trines, squares, and sextiles are lower.

Orbs are a mathematical leeway when an aspect occurs. For example, a conjunction is when two planets are 0 degrees of each other. However, with orbs, a planet can be up to 10 degrees away from another planet and it would still be a conjunction, depending on your system of orbs. The existence of orbs argues that the effects of aspects do not have to be numerically exact, but its strength will increase as the planets come closer to a numerically exact aspect.

One common question is: What are the right orbs for each aspect? In various branches in astrology, the orbs will often change. For example, natal astrology will often have larger orbs than predictive astrology. Also, orbs are often personally determined by you. Find or create an orb system that works for you. Here is my personal orb system for reference:

Natal astrology

  • Conjunctions - 10 degree orb

  • Oppositions - 8 degree orb

  • Sextiles, squares, trines - 4-6 degree orb

Predictive astrology (transits)

  • Conjunctions - 5 degree orb

  • Oppositions - 3 degree orb

  • Sextiles, squares, trines - 2 degree orb

Another way to understand aspects generally is how they are formed. Planets will move counterclockwise in a chart, their movements creating aspects since some planets move faster than others.

When an aspect is moving closer to an exact aspect, it is applying. When an aspect is moving away from an exact aspect, it is separating. The orb of an aspect will gradually decrease with applying aspects and will gradually increase with separating aspects.

Astro.com will show you whether an aspect is applying or separating and will also show you whether the aspect is greater or less than the exact aspect.

Sun in the 9th House

The 9th House gives insight to what and how we formulate our views of the world, manifesting as religion and philosophy. The 9th House shows our conception of the world. Distancing ourselves from the small details and summarizing what we witness in foreign situations is found by the 9th House. Traveling and long distance is also covered in this house. In terms of relationships, the 9th House shows how we try to make our relationships flexible to the circumstances of the world.

For those with this placement, their identity and sense of self is tied to their personal world view. Growing up, people with this placement will often be sensitive to worldly events - for witnessing world events, evaluating these events, and then creating a world view is an important part of creating the identity. It’s important for these individuals to pay careful attention to the news, being sure to create a world view that reinforces their identity positively and healthily.

It’s also important for these individuals to be able to freely practice their world view into their lives. For these individuals, practicing one’s ideal religion and/or philosophy is a way for these people to express themselves. These individuals will often dislike being forced to practice a religion or philosophy they don’t necessarily believe in. They feel by practicing a religion or philosophy they didn’t choose to practice, they aren’t being authentic. Choosing a philosophy and religion that helps these people live what they believe is an authentic life is essential.

The starting philosophy, religion, or lack of belief these people grew up with will strongly affect them, whether these people like this starting philosophy or religion or not. These starting beliefs often color their own identity, and if these people do not like the belief system they have started with, it can be hard for these people to completely separate from their starting belief system, for pieces of their identity are tied to these beliefs, even if they dislike them. It can be difficult for these people to separate themselves.

However, it’s with these struggles where these people can often gather the skills to find a world view that works for them. These people believe that one should adopt a world view that helps them live out an authentic identity. However, due to having a such a strong tie between their identity and beliefs, these people can often be easily offended by those who argue against their beliefs. They feel that arguing against their beliefs is arguing against their own identity. For some of these individuals, they find their true identity themselves through finding and following the beliefs they want to adopt.

While these people can have strong and fueled reactions against those who do not support their philosophical and/or religious beliefs, these people are often open-minded, intelligent, and sensitive to other people’s religious views. Due to their identities having such a strong tie to their beliefs, they will often treat others with respect and curiosity in regards to their world view. These people will often not judge another person’s beliefs, for they see belief to be a personal experience - especially for themselves.

These people can also find themselves through traveling. They feel that they are not completely themselves doing mundane activities. By traveling to foreign places, by seeing novelties of all kinds, they feel understood. These people can often feel better understood by unknown places and individuals than people they have known all their life. In a sense, to see the novelty of the world is to see the novelty and uniqueness within themselves. When these people are mindful of their journeys, they often discover a lot about themselves.

However, due to finding themselves in the unknown and through constructed beliefs, it can be difficult for people with this placement to be grounded in the actual world. Rather than living their life in the actual world, they often live their life in their conception of the world. These people often feel distant, for they’re often thinking on a mental plane that often isn’t aligned with others and with the world.

The unknown workings of reality can often be difficult for these people to handle. When these people’s beliefs are challenged by the unknown, they don’t just feel their beliefs being challenged - they feel that their identity is challenged. Due to this, these people can often face an unwanted reality check. At one moment, they feel like they have a solid, constructive grip on reality (belief) and the next moment, they’re not quite sure what to believe in anymore.

Regardless of the challenges these individuals face, having the Sun in the 9th House is a placement that helps an individual test the strength of beliefs. By having a strong connection between the identity and belief, individuals with this placement are sure to take belief seriously. These individuals teach that belief is not a foolish way to assume the workings of the world. Belief is a way to tolerate and embrace the unknown, to remind us that we are only simply human to a grand unknown world waiting for discovery.

Sun in the 12th House

The 12th House can often simultaneously represent freedom and imprisonment at the same time. Our dreams and subconscious, free, but also contained spaces are represented in the 12th House. Prisons and hospitals are often represented in the 12th House because prisoners and patients are restricted to stay in the building, but they are free from the brutality of the societal norms outside.

When the Sun is in the 12th House, a person’s true identity is hidden within their subconscious. This identity is only completely seen in utmost privacy, and for the native, they can often cherish, yet also dislike the fact that their identity is hidden. However, due to the simultaneous revealing and hiding nature of the 12th House, others can see fragments of the native’s identity and they are left to construct an identity they don’t quite understand. Parts of the person’s identity often slips out of the subconscious without the person knowing.

Due to this, those with the Sun in the 12th House can feel misunderstood by others. They can feel that people construct an image of them that isn’t true. However, there are times where people with this placement struggle to know if the identity they made themselves is even true. Due to this, people with this placement can often feel lost in themselves, wondering what about themselves is exactly true and isn’t true. Due to being misunderstood by others, a lot of this inner thinking is full of doubt, since there isn’t a lot of feedback.

Being misunderstood by others as a result can make these people struggle with being in the spotlight. It’s a paradoxical struggle, for these people want to find themselves and to secretly shine, yet at the same time, they shy away from the spotlight, not knowing what parts of themselves will illuminate. However, part of this struggle comes from how their identity was shoved into the shadows. These people are often never allowed to shine, and due to this, these people may wonder if their identity is too intolerable to show to others.

These individuals may not have been encouraged to have a strong identity growing up, and due to this, their identity is scattered, parts of it showing in certain occasions. While there is a disunity, there is flexibility. In a sense, this flexibility in identity makes these people elusive and enigmatic. These people can often seem fascinating to curious individuals. Due to this, others can try to pry in these people’s lives, making it even more important for these individuals to keep their privacy. The identity of these people are only unified by themselves.

However, this flexibility in identity is often the case due to the person engulfing the identity of others. This is one of the reasons why people with this placement are often in solitude. Seeing the many various identities of others can often be overwhelming for sometimes, these people can struggle to handle their own identity. By being in solitude, these people can recharge and reassess who they are. Even if these people have a strong group of friends and lovers, they will still need alone time, and often, this need for alone time is a good way for these people to determine which friends and lovers are worth staying with.

Many of these individuals will often have a strong imagination, finding that their flexible identity is shown best through subjects that can not be easily found in reality. People with this placement will often get immersed with characters in TV shows, video games, and other mediums where they feel that can have a solid grip on themselves. It’s not that these individuals literally believe they are these fantasy characters, it’s that these individuals find that their identities are best articulated by these characters. Also, the message in some of these mediums can often present a possible path and purpose for these individuals, for these people often struggle to find an identity because they struggle to find a purpose to sustain it. These individuals feel that they are not correctly identified by conscious reality.

With the feeling of being lost, people with this placement are often introspective, and they will often spend a lot of time by themselves. In their solitude, these people will often do activities that reflect their identity. By doing the personal, private activities they enjoy, these people can work to have a truly intimate sense of self that is constructed by themselves and only themselves.

At their best, an individual with their Sun in the 12th House can construct a truly genuine sense of self that defies the current societal understanding of having a strong identity. Even with flexibility and change, these people have the potential to show that you don’t have to maintain a set, foundational identity to have a strong identity. Individuals with this placement show that strong identities are identities that are flexible enough to withstand adversity. An individual with their Sun in the 12th House can have a strong intimate relationship with themselves that can’t be shaken by the circumstances of reality.

Pluto in the 4th House

The 4th House represents several things: our past, upbringing, and what keeps us comfortable. The 4th House is in the bottom of the chart, and it often provides a strong starting point and foundation for the native to work upon as the native grows up. Planets in the 4th House show the person investing part of themselves in maintaining this foundation.

When Pluto is in the 4th House, the workings of the past and the person’s upbringing can be a great source of either self-empowerment or destruction. People with this placement are marked by their childhood. Even if the childhood was uneventful and insignificant from another perspective, the person with this placement would feel otherwise. To people with Pluto in the 4th House, their childhood was everything to them in an intense way.

The 4th House represents the “starting place” and for those with Pluto in the 4th House, these people can fear their past and roots due to the intense exposure they had with it. Due to this, people with this placement will usually not share information about their family or past. They keep their families and past under wraps as a way to protect themselves, but perhaps to also not confront the intense and sometimes terrifying hold their family and past can have on them. If the person sees their past and family to be something to be feared and hidden, their past and family will have a strong grip on them.

However, if the person sees their past to be a place of empowerment, the person will have a strong hold on their family and past. When a person with this placement accepts the darkness and secrets of their beginnings and sees it as a way to develop their strengths, this person can start using the hidden strength they’ve had all along: creating an unshakable and incredibly strong foundation for the self to grow on. People with this placement have the ability to reroot and restructure themselves. They have the ability to create a true, powerful sense of home. At their best, these people can create a sense of home that is empowering, intimate, and genuine.

People with this placement often seek for a true sense of home for they believe that finding strong roots is the way to empowerment. Due to this, they are often private, only letting those they truly trust into their safe space. If a person with this placement lets you into their safe space, they trust that you won’t hurt them in this safe space. Those with Pluto in the 4th can feel as if the safe space they strongly cling to can also transform to be their destructive space if it is controlled by the wrong people. Due to this, Pluto in the 4th people are often controlling of their safe space. They find power in their own vulnerability and comfort.

Pluto in the 4th people are skilled at adapting to many circumstances. Due to growing up early in an environment that was seen as secretly chaotic, these people know how to handle themselves in highly stressful situations. At their best, these people can find peace in even the most volatile situations. These people are often constructing and deconstructing their sense of home and safety, not only changing their home but also themselves during this process. Redefining safety and comfort is a way for these people to transform themselves for the better or worse.

While one’s upbringing with Pluto in the 4th House can often be secretive, manipulative, and chaotic, those with Pluto in the 4th House can also have a very intimate and passionate upbringing. Pluto brings intensity to the household, and when there are no power struggles or fear between the family members, people with this placement can build intimate and close relationships with their loved ones. Just as volatile circumstances can build one’s resistance to chaos, building intimate and genuine bonds with loved ones can help also.

People with this placement will often see one of their parents to be a powerful authority, for better or worse. Depending on the relationship, this parent could either have an intimate and close relationship to the person, or have power struggles with the person due to feeling discomfort. Either way, the relationship between people with this placement and their parents are often intense, and it’s often up to the parent to start their family dynamic to either be loving and genuine, or secretive and turbulent.

Intensity is something Pluto in the 4th individuals know early on. Knowing what to do with this intensity and how to handle intensity throughout their life is an important trial Pluto in the 4th individuals need to learn. By reevaluating what truly brings them comfort and power, Pluto in the 4th individuals have the opportunity to empower themselves from square one.
